The Heartache Series: Make a Playlist

By 9:35 PM

Making a playlist is my first response to every noteworthy life event.  Hence why most of my friends own 5-10 "mixes by Alyssa."  I support the idea that music is word power.  And listening to familiar tunes this week has been my torment and my salvation.

A torment because I'm under the belief that good playlists acknowledge the whole spectrum of emotion.  Thus, my playlists aren't restricted to songs that say "fuck him, it's over."  Nope, instead I acknowledge that there's regret and a continual wish that you could return to the love you once knew.  I torture my little heart by including songs like this one (and this, among others).

Salvation because lyrics that mirror your own experience are healing somehow.  The songs I put on repeat are the ones that make me feel peace or hope.  Or the songs that make me feel stronger.  So, for anyone who needs a good heartbreak playlist, enjoy my top 25 tunes.

A heartbreak mix is required for me because melodies and lyrics are powerful.

Below are lyrical segments and a video from a few tunes on my list.

Sam and Ruby, Need Me Less
Be with me until the time / I don't say the things you're needing me to say / ... I wish there was another way / I'd be lying if I said I don't see what's wrong / I let us be as we are / Because I like to feel that somehow I belong / ... but I never grow if I don't go / I gotta try to learn to need you less / You will find one day / When you least expect / You will be someone who'll give as much as get / And when that wisdom comes / And you look back on us / You will know that this is love / ... I gotta try to learn to need you less

Sam and Ruby, Taking Memories
Though I have to go, I'll have you here with me / Cause I'm taking memories / Taking pictures in my head, of times, of peace / I'm taking memories / I won't dwell on what we lost but what we'll keep / We had a good thing, didn't we? / If we try to say that the end is all we have to think upon / That would betray all the times we got along / Some relationships have their day / But night comes down on them

Patty Griffin, Let Him Fly
And there ain't no talking to this man / He's been trying to tell me so / It took awhile to understand / The beauty of just letting go / Cause it would take an acrobat / And I already tried all that / I'm gonna let him fly

Rosi Golan, Been a Long Day
It's been a long week / And all the lines come down heavy on me / It's been a long week / I'm finally feeling like it's okay to break / Into a thousand pieces no one can replace / Only I can find my way / It's been a long day / I just wanna hide away

Tessa Powers & Adam Kiyuna, King of Wishful Thinking
