The Heartache Series: Time
I wish I'd seen this episode a month ago. It's encouraging to watch someone else deal with heartache (to witness Marshall's highs and lows). And to see that only time can heal a broken heart.
Below is an episode of How I Met Your Mother
Season 2, Episode 1: "Where were we?"
Season 2, Episode 1: "Where were we?"
Notice the varying perspectives on the breakup and heartache...
- Barney recommends that a broken-hearted person choose to "just stop being sad." And be awesome instead. If only it were that easy.
- Ted thinks it's fine if Marshall deals with his heartache at his own pace.
- Robin defends Lily's decision to break it off with Marshall, since she's "just trying to figure out who she is."
- After a month of melancholy, Robin argues that Marshall needs tough love. He needs friends to push him past the heartache hump.
- Ted eventually tells Marshall he's become the sad, pathetic ghost of himself.
- Ted decides, in the end, that only time can heal Marshall's heartache.
In the episode, these activities are meant to cheer up the broken-hearted...
- Ted takes Marshall to a baseball game.
- Barney determines that Marshall needs strippers---new memories of new boobs.
- Robin takes him to the shooting range.
- Marshall chooses a less constructive activity for himself, to read Lily's credit card bill.
The resolution....
- Marshall determines, "Okay, okay. Resolved. Starting tomorrow, I am going to start being okay."
- Scene switches to the next day, and Ted's voice-over explains: "But he wasn't. Cause that's not how life works. The next day he found one of her socks or something, and we were back to square one. And then one morning.... Marshall had come back from the dead. Because while baseball, strippers, and guns can help. The only thing that can really heal a broken heart is time."
