The Heartache Series: Be Grateful
I recently re-read One Thousand Gifts, an awakening book by Ann Voskamp.
It is one of the best books I've read in the last decade, if not ever. She is a tremendous writer (lots of beautiful diction). The premise of her challenging book is to look for gratefulness in and around you. Count blessings. See grace. Choose gratitude.
It's a great book because it follows me into real-life. I think of her stories and one-liners throughout my days. A broken heart is no exception. Her challenges meet me here, as every fiber of my being revolts against the idea of counting blessings and exerting thankfulness.
So, I begin with a short list....
- I have a strong heart. I can persevere. Well, at least I thought that until recently.... so maybe it's still true?
- The man I am broken over, he is a good one. Flawed, yes certainly, and not courageous in his affection towards me. But a good man. I am not crushed with regret.
- I have a supportive and wise family.
- I walk with Christ who is a healer of my innermost.
- I live at the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. Hiking is inevitable.
- My friends are hilarious. Also, they are deep and loving. Best of all, they don't judge me for my wimpish tears, doubts, or endless shortcomings.
- Summer is here and the pool is calling.
- My dog is a total cutie.
